"Microbes conjures up a unique sound-world that, from the opening unnerving synth line of ‘New Fears’, delves deep into an immersive set of dissonant tones & haunted ambience that at times is cinematic in its execution. Far from isolating the listener, these noise- ridden distortion-heavy pieces intend to invoke an emotional response, be it a feeling of oppression from the nagging attrition of ‘Earworm’ or of being all alone in a large dark space, surrounded by some ominous presence. Shards of light pierce the darkness too, the playfully warped electronica of ‘Three Legged Cat’ providing a neat colourful counterpoint to the blackness. Those who like the unnerving atmospheres of Ben Frost & Emptyset or Tim Hecker at his most ferocious along with the industrial soundscapes of David Lynch films will feel most at home here. An accomplished debut that hints at much more to come from the disturbed mind of Microbes."
